East Coast Birding
Woke to quite bad weather in Fujairah this morning. However with our targets of Persian Shearwater and Sooty Gull in mind we left for the beach ! It was raining and very windy so decided breakfast was probably the best thing to do initially :-)
Fed and Watered we once again set out driving the coast line from Fujairah Port down to Kalba, starting with a sea watch, only had to wait 5 minutes before we picked up 3 Persian Shearwater skimming the surface a couple of Km off shore, Priority no 1 achieved !
We came across large flocks of Black-headed gull with small numbers of Slender-billed Gull interspersed along with several examples of Lesser-black Backed Gull of both the Steppe and Heuglin's varieties. We also picked up four Greater-Sand Plover feeding at the water's edge one of which showed some semblance of Summer Plumage. We finally ended up at Kalba which always seems to be the best location for Sooty Gull with approx 30 birds providing many photo opportunities for my client.
Back to the Dairy Farm !
Around Lunch time I got news of a reported Great Snipe back at the farms. We had not scheduled to go back but given there were only 11 UAE records and only 2 since 2011 it was a no brainer that we had to give it a shot. As we arrived we were greated with fabulous encounters with 2 Bonelli's Eagles, hunting low over the cattle sheds.
Excitement over we proceeded to walk the large fodder fields in the hope we would at least flush the Great Snipe, alas despite several hours and many Kms walked we failed to find the Snipe. We did however flush at least 10 Common Snipe, 1 Pin-tailed Snipe and a Common Quail. We also encountered a European Golden Plover that we had not seen yesterday,
Funally with the weather front finally out of the way and sunshine all the way we set off on hour 3 Hour Journey to Al Ain.
